The AI Revolution In Medicine
I finished reading a very timely book on the exploding topic of artificial intelligence. Two very important reasons to read this book: 1) the author’s early work with GPT-4 and 2) the focus on medicine. A dominant conversation occurring in board rooms across the world involves the critical question of generative AI and its impact on a business and/or an industry. One of the authors is Peter Lee, Corporate VP for Research and Incubations at Microsoft. He leads the company’s worldwide research labs. For the past six years, his primary focus has been on AI’s uses in healthcare and the life sciences.
A second author is Carey Goldberg, a longtime medical and science journalist who has covered topics ranging from healthcare costs to genomic research. She has been on staff for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, WBUR/NPR, and Bloomberg News. The third author is Isaac Kohane, inaugural chair of Harvard Medical School’s Department of Biomedical Informatics who has worked on medical AI since the 1990s. He is urgently focused on helping doctors become more effective and fulfilled as they work with machine intelligence.
Its current state of knowledge is important to understand. That state is surprisingly good. We have found that GPT-4 has extensive knowledge of medicine and can reason, explain, and empathize in common and rare clinical scenarios.
Authors — The AI Revolution in Medicine
As you can see from their backgrounds, the authors are ideally suited to provide a glimpse into the implications of AI on the health and wellness ecosystem. The authors describe being stunned at times while exploring the possibilities. What makes their storytelling effective is the use of example conversations with GPT-4. Through those examples, you begin to understand why they were stunned. They approach this analysis with a broad view that appreciates both the possibilities and the challenges. In this rapidly expanding age of AI, this is a must read. I have added it to my library.
